So Obama won.
Thank You America for not being ridiculous. Thank You for voting who you think could steer a country to the top and not for the man you'd rather have a beer with.
I'm completely amazed at the amount of States Obama carried. Quite surprised. Very interesting that Florida, Pennsylvania, Colorado and Ohio were blue this year. However, very, very disappointed in voters in Florida and California for voting for Obama and then voting to curtail certain fundamental rights of their fellow citizens. Shame.
IF you ever thought for one miniscule of a second that Sarah Palin would have made a great Vice President or (gasp) President-please WATCH THIS FOX NEWS (yes, I'm quoting FOX news here) report on her lack of knowledge about Africa being a continent and not a country.
Prepare yourself here.

What is Democracy?
Democracy is a process where an issue needs to be decided by a simple vote. When someone submits a proposal where a decision has to be made on it, the voters vote get to decide what will be done about that proposal. The side that gets the most votes wins the election. That simply put is democracy. That process applies to all issues.
I did not care for the outcome of the presidential election but I must accept the vote. I will live with the decision of the people. However, Florida and California voted on an issue and democracy prevailed so I will live with that decision too.
Shame on you if you cannot tolerate democracy.

So Obama won.
Unfortunately, yes he won.

Obama's the least qualified person ever elected President! He has no private sector experience in anything. He's a Saul Alinsky disciple(Alinsky was an avowed communist - do some research). He was a state Senator in IL with an unremarkable career. He has less than 150 days of working experience as a US Senator(his Presidential campaign started less than a year after he was elected).

Please give me a Constitutional reference for your "fundamental rights" statement. I sure don't see it anywhere. I think you need to read the Constitution, especially the 10th Amendment.

If you want to take the word of a coward who was unwilling to put a face to their accusations then you are admitting that you have a template about her based on a false presentation by a biased media. The woman is very intelligent and very well spoken. As for using FoxNews as a source, well, you now need to watch the interview by Greta Van Suttren of Mrs. Palin. Greta makes the point early in the interview that she spoke with someone who was there when the statements in question were made and that person said Mrs. Palin made no such comments. The person making the accusations is a bitter loser and looking to put blame everywhere but where it belongs, with Sen. McCain and his campaign management staff. His was the most poorly run campaign I've seen in years.
Christopher, you need to come out of the liberal cocoon you are in and stop accepting without question what your professors told you. That's not education, that's indoctrination. I guess you do have an excuse though because of your age. If you're not a liberal at 20 you have no heart, if your not conservative by 40 you have no brain - Winston Churchill
I bet you are trying to figure out who this is. I'm your cousin through the marriage of you Grandpa to my Aunt. You have an incredible resource in your Grandpa. You need to talk to him more and learn what he can teach you. Also, I studied political science while at Ohio State with an emphasis on Foreign Policy and Election Politics.
This, I hope, serves as an adequate response to both of your comments.
First of all, Dave, please, please do not confuse my age as an 'excuse' to be a liberal. I'm well versed in Winston Churchill and his philosophies, quotes and biography. You speak of my liberal cocoon...what about your ultra-conservative cocoon? You know nothing about my political beliefs except from what you can take from a few updates on a blog. Yes, I supported Barack Obama as my preferred candidate-not that I have to defend my political choice to you. Do not accuse me of being some type of blind-sided liberal. I vote for candidates from both parties and 'conservatively' and 'liberally' depending on the issue at hand.
Let's talk about qualified versus unqualified, shall we? Let's look at Senator McCain. A very qualified man who should have been the Republican's ticket in 2000. However, silly Republicans voted for GWB (the worst, by far President our country has ever seen). McCain's service record to his country is impeccable. However, military and senatorial service alone do not make thee a good candidate. Some of our best leaders (ex. FDR) lacked military service and is considered one of the best Presidents. This is, naturally, a relative questions. McCain however lacks experience in the private sector as well. The last 25 years in Washington has left a permanent imprint in the Senate chambers with little to show for in terms of economic development. Let us all remember that he believed it was a good idea to send our troops to Iraq. The reasoning behind this is still unclear. Continuing to discredit politicians, look at VP Sarah Palin. This cow of a politician has been a govenor for less than two years in an administration that is plagued with secrecy, scandal and backroom dealings. I watched the pre-election interviews with Gibson and Couric and was dissapointed in her responses on many issues...including the famous Bush Doctrine question. The person a heartbeat away from the Presidency should know a bit about what is happening outside of our own borders. Gov. Palin, asked a mere two months before being chosen for VP-Candidate stated she would consider running if she knew what the VP did. Ok. Admittendly, McCain is weak on economic issues. Biden brings years of Senatorial experience to the ticket. Barack Obama's intelligence and down-to-earth approach is something I think we need. A well-educated man who knows what it is like to face adversity-unlike half of the Washington elite. This could go on for hours.
Or perhaps we've forgotten that there is more to America than its heartland in the bread basket. Not every one lives a happy-suburban lifestyle. Not everyone goes to church on Sunday or pays their taxes or holds the door open or give their seat to a lady. Trying to force other people into this view of American life is ridiculous. A land of 300 million people we still lack basic infrastructure in several areas. How are continued tax-cuts going to solve any of our many, many crisis...including a ten trillion dollar deficit which continues to skyrocket daily. I will remind you that President Bush inherited an administration with little debt. Additionally, the Republican party is in shambles. It has strayed from its very core. Small government and equality. Gone are the days we could depend on the Republican party to steer our economy to responsible growth. Since 1994's "Contract for America" the party has gone astray. Depending on radical Christians to be their voice and primary base. Many would like to see our country turned into a theocracy and I do believe we still have a separation of Church and State in this country. I think all churches, period, whose leaders publically support a politician (dem or repub) should have their 501 c 3 status rescinded. What about free market systems? We already live in a ridiculously welfared state. It's jus for a select few though. If we lived in a true market economy, this country would be nothing more than a wild frontier. The market alone cannot operate a country or solve its ills. If that were true, we wouldn't be pumping billions of dollars into the financial system. We'd let them fail the way their suposed to due to greedy and risky behavior. Don't tell me deregulation helped our country. I'm tired of buying everything with MADE IN CHINA stamped on the back. What about MADE SOMEWHERE WITH QUALITY AND HUMAN DIGNITY. Or somewhere not supporting Chinese communisits. Do you shop at Wal-Mart? I hope not.
Fox news is a joke and so was that piece on Mrs. Palin. I'm sure she can identitfy Africa as a continent and not as a country-but this does go to show the pettiness ensued by the McCain campaign and its advisors. Also the willingness of your party to throw away so easily the person it was prepared to elect to Monticello and The White House. You must be sick in the head if you honestly believe FOX reports their news "fair and balanced." If you believe that, I've got water front property in Iowa I'd like to offer you.
I'm well aware of what the 10th Amendment says. However, I'm also aware of Supreme Court rulings and State-to-State recipriocation laws. How does any of this mix? State Supreme Rulings in several states including Texas, Vermont, Massachusetts and more have already ruled in favor of equality for citizens, not just some. It is only a matter of time before these issues make it to the federal level. The constituion proclaims we are 'endowed with certain unalienable rights....among them life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." Define happiness. You cannot. It is subjective and relative. Your pursuit of hapiness and liberty is just as important as anyones provided it doesn't encroach on public or private safety and someone elses right. What makes you happy? This could go on for hours.
My Granfather is an amazing man whom I love dearly and carry much respect for. However, I do not agree with him on many things in a political nature. Therfore, I do not wish to learn from his opinion on the "socialist Europeans" or the liberals of California or how buying from China is helping our economy or whatever he wishes to espouse.
My professors at Florida State hardly turned me 'liberal.' They did, however, challenge my previous way of thinking. Step outside of the box, look for once past my front yard and into the public playground that is my country. The United States is a great country but it is not without shameful moments. Don't be fooled into believing that it is the only answer or the best country.
I'll provide you with this AP press story on professors lack of influence on their studetns. I looked for this article on FOX, I don't think they reported on it. Why would they? It's on of their top selling points. Professors' Liberalism Contagious? Maybe Not.
I resent being told that the only reason I voted for Senator Obama was because I am young, stupid and brainwashed by the media.
My previous link failed to work.

At 41 years of age I've learned as much or more than I did while in college. If you look at my blog you will see that I have a wide variety of reading material. Am I conservative, absolutely, in a cocoon, at one time, yes, but hardly now. I can remember the Carter admin with its stag-flation, double-digit inflation, interest rates and unemployment. This all lead to the misery index. The top marginal tax rate was ~70%. We had little to no business investment taking place. There was gas rationing and long lines at the stations when there need not have been. We were viewed as a weak nation who would not stand up for itself. That's why we had the Iran hostage crisis. I do not want to see that again and I fear that President-Elect Obama, with his "spread the wealth" ideas and willingness to sit down "without preconditions" with those that seek to harm us will take us right back there.
When Ronald Reagan came into office he pushed for and got ALL tax rates reduced, including lowering the top marginal rate to 28%. Federal tax receipts more than doubles as a result. The deficit was on the decline due to the expanding employment and wages. The reason the deficit went up at all is not because of the lower tax rates but due to the fact that for every $1 dollar of revenue spending went up $2. The deficit went up further when President George H.W. Bush broke his no new taxes pledge and agreed to raise taxes while allowing the continued growth of spending. Lack of spending control and budgeting that doesn't work in the real world is what causes deficits.
Now, as you will remember it's Congress that controls the purse strings. The President can make suggestions, but it is Congress that ultimately decides on spending. The Democrats controlled Congress at the beginning of the Reagan administration and held The House for the entire administration. In 1994 when Newt Gingrich and House Republicans came out with The Contract With America they voted the majority party. It was the control of spending and reforms that they pushed through that allowed for the deficit to begin to decline again. When George W. Bush was elected in '00 no one knew what was about to happen just months after his inauguration. This country was attacked! Not the other way around. We had to answer and we did. Unfortunately(and this you have right), instead of being fiscally responsible and curtailing spending so as to be able to pay for the war on terror, Congress with the backing of the President continued to spend as if nothing happened. They stopped acting like Republicans and acted like Democrat-lite. The tax cuts has nothing to do with the increasing deficits. In fact they helped the economy recover faster after the attack. Once again, tax receipts increased. The economy grew and jobs were created. Unfortunately, spending continued to increase as well.
President Bush did many things that I disagree with(they can be seen on my blog), but the war is not one of them. Great Briton, France, Egypt, and Jordan all had the same intelligence that we had regarding Iraq. We DID NOT GO ON OUR INTELLIGENCE ALONE! That is an absolute falsehood that has been perpetuated by the Bush haters in the main stream media. We can argue all day about whether or not we should have gone in there. We did! We need to finish the job, which we are quite successfully. You may not be aware, but we are winning and Iraqi security forces are taking over more and more and many of our troops are now coming home or being used to help in Afghanistan. Defending this country is not something to apologize for! On that note, this most definitely is the greatest nation in the world. It has been and continues to be the greatest force for good this world has ever seen. This country has beaten back Dictators, Communists and Fascists over and over again. Millions upon millions of people are living in freedom today due to this country!
As for Christian conservatives, please show me one who has stated a desire for a theocracy! We(yes, I am proudly a born again Christian as well as a conservative) believe in the Constitution as it was written by our Founding Fathers. Clearly you don't understand what being a Christian is. It is not merely a title. It is a belief in Christ Jesus as Lord and Savior, that he was born of a virgin, died on the cross shedding his blood for our sins, rose again 3 days later and now sits at the right hand of God his Father. Don't try to make the claim that Christ believed in socialism either. He most certainly did not. He taught personal responsibility. He taught that we were supposed to take care of people in need on our own and not rely on other/government to do so. To that end this country, especially Christian conservatives have led the world in charitable giving.
On the 10th Amendment, you rightly claim that some state Supreme Courts have ruled in favor of homosexual marriage. Texas, however, is not one of them. The Texas Supreme Court ruled on the validity of sodomy laws not homosexual marriage. This is exactly where it, like abortion, should be determined, not on the Federal level. You also state that, "The constituion proclaims we are 'endowed with certain unalienable rights....among them life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." You left a VERY KEY phrase out. It says, "we are endowed BY OUR CREATOR with certain unalienable rights..." Our rights are God given. They come from NO MAN! Like it or not, God does not approve of homosexuality. If you'd like I can show you that in both the old and new testaments. BTW, marriage is not a right either. There are many cases where it is disallowed, not just homosexual unions.
As for your statements regarding Mrs. Palin, you lose all credibility and your arguments go out the window as a result of your referring to her as a "cow." I will endeavor to make the point, however, that both of the interviews that you cite were poorly conducted and quite edited to make her look bad. As for the "Bush Doctrine" answer, she did answer it correctly. There are multiple parts to it. As for not knowing what the VP does, Biden clearly doesn't. His answer to the question in the debate made this quite clear. Mrs. Palin has also been a Mayor, please don't insult small towns either by saying that's nothing. It's more impressive than being a community organizer. She's also been a council member and been on several state boards/commissions. As for Obama's intellect, that isn't what I question. It's his belief system and it being so influenced by radicals like Mr. Alinsky.
As for welfare, I don't believe in it for personal or corporate purposes.
“Congress has not unlimited powers to provide for the general welfare, but only those specifically enumerated.”
-Thomas Jefferson
James Madison, the Father of the Constitution, elaborated upon this limitation in a letter to James Robertson:
“With respect to the two words ‘general welfare,’ I have always regarded them as qualified by the detail of powers connected with them. To take them in a literal and unlimited sense would be a metamorphosis of the Constitution into a character which there is a host of proofs was not contemplated by its creators.”
“If Congress can do whatever in their discretion can be done by money, and will promote the general welfare, the government is no longer a limited one possessing enumerated powers, but an indefinite one subject to particular exceptions.” James Madison, “Letter to Edmund Pendleton,”
-James Madison, January 21, 1792, in The Papers of James Madison, vol. 14, Robert A Rutland et. al., ed (Charlottesvile: University Press of Virginia,1984)
" I am for doing good to the poor, but I differ in opinion of the means. I think the best way of doing good to the poor, is not making them easy in poverty, but leading or driving them out of it."
- Benjamin Franklin, On the Price of Corn and Management of the Poor, November 1776
On WallyWorld, I don't like them because of their predatory business practices, not because of what they care or their employment practices.
As for FoxNews, they are by far the most balanced of all the news outlets. Even on their political commentator shows there is always both sides of an argument represented. This is a statistical FACT, not my opinion. You can even see it if you objectively watch their shows.
Oh, I didn't say that you were stupid, young(yes), naive(yes), brainwashed by the lib media and your profs(to a great extent). BTW, your grandfather is far wiser than you or I. His age and life experience grant him that. Our elders are our best resource for knowledge and common sense.
Christopher, I spoke with your Grandfather and I fear that, if I continue to debate you, I'll stir things up and make your mother, grandfather, and my aunt mad at me. So, I'm going end the debate here before it goes any farther.
I do earnestly hope for the best for you and pray that The Lord will take care of you. You are clearly a bright young man and I know that as you grow older wisdom will come to you as it does everyone.
Take care of yourself!
Dave, it is clear that we are not going to agree on many things, including but not limited to how governments should be run and how Christ see's his disciples (us). I continue to be resent being told I'm naive and brainwashed by the media. That is far from the truth, but once again, we probably wont agree on this either.
Let's agree that we love our country and want to see the best for it. That's what democracy is all about.
Hardliner stances from either side will only bring us down, not raise us up. Hubris, I remind you, brought down the Greek and Roman empires, we are not exempt from that.
And thank you for your best wishes. They are appreciated.
